Border tunnel crackdown

first_img AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MORECasino Insider: Here’s a look at San Manuel’s new high limit rooms, Asian restaurant None were discovered in Texas or New Mexico. One was found along the U.S.-Canadian border last year – a passage that linked a hut in Langley, British Columbia, to a living room in Lynden, Wash. None of the tunnels have been linked to terrorists and many were never completed, but Feinstein said they represent a threat to national security. “Think of everything that can be smuggled underground that can do this nation and our people great harm,” the California Democrat told reporters. Feinstein’s bill, to be co-sponsored by Arizona Republican Sen. Jon Kyl, would impose jail terms of up to 20 years for building or financing a cross-border tunnel and up to 10 years for landlords who negligently allow them to be built on their property. “It was amazing to all of us that it was legal to build tunnels like this,” said San Diego County Sheriff Bill Kolender. SAN DIEGO – Sen. Dianne Feinstein said Tuesday that she will introduce legislation to make the financing and construction of cross-border tunnels a federal crime, punishable by up to 20 years in prison. Feinstein spoke inside a warehouse where authorities last month found the longest cross-border tunnel ever discovered along the U.S.-Mexico border. “Oh, for heaven’s sake!” she said as she peered inside the 2,400-foot passageway that leads to a warehouse in Tijuana, Mexico. “Unbelievable, unbelievable.” Feinstein released a map of 39 secret tunnels discovered on the U.S.-Mexico border since 9-11, the vast majority in and around San Diego and Nogales, Ariz. Authorities found 21 along California’s border with Mexico, including eight in San Diego in the past two months. The massive tunnel discovered last month in San Diego was lit, ventilated and went as deep as 90 feet. Carlos Cardenas Calvillo, a Mexican citizen, who worked at the San Diego warehouse where the tunnel surfaced, was charged with conspiracy to import marijuana. Feinstein’s office estimated that 12 tunnels were discovered along the U.S.-Mexico border between 1990 and September 2001. None were found along the Canadian border during that time. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Please try again.subscribeCongratulations! Cloud Computing: Beginning to Take Shape

first_imgIn 2008 Oracle’s Larry Ellison said that all the talk about cloud computing is ‘complete gibberish’ and that he just didn’t understand what it was all about.  Two years later, cloud computing has taken more shape.  It is used now as an ‘umbrella term’ that includes Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), and Software as a Service (SaaS).Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) is a provisioning model where a service provider offers infrastructure elements like storage, hardware, servers and networking components on a per-use basis over the Internet or via private connectivity.  The provider owns, houses, services and maintains the equipment.  IaaS allows organizations to extend their on-premise applications and servers. Some of the characteristics of IaaS are that it offers:Dynamic scaling up and down of resourcesUtility pay-as-you-use billing modelInternet or private connectionAutomated administrative tasksIaaS is becoming an increasingly popular model for deploying services.   A Yankee Group report found that 24% of large corporations are already using IaaS and another 37% have plans to be able to use it within the next 24 months.  The number one problem that organizations say that they need to overcome before adopting IaaS is virtualization security.  But most companies agree that the benefits of regulatory compliance, reliability and employee use from IaaS as outweighing those issues. The report found that 67 percent preferred the use of private clouds for deployment.  Preferred private cloud vendors included SoftLayer, Cloud Leverage, AT&T, Tata, and Savvis.  29 percent of today’s IaaS users rate Systems Integrators as their most trusted partner for working with cloud computing.last_img read more

Leicester’s Jamie Vardy keen to build on Liverpool display

first_imgLeicester City striker Jamie Vardy is hoping to fire regularly after his brace in Monday’s 3-1 victory over Liverpool helped the struggling champions end their five-game losing streak in the Premier League.Vardy, who scored 24 league goals during Leicester’s title-winning campaign last year, has been far from his prolific best this season, managing nine goals across competitions so far.The 30-year-old also scored in back-to-back games for the first time since September, having netted in Leicester’s 2-1 Champions League loss at Spanish side Seville last week.”I’ve been very frustrated with the amount of goals I’ve got this season but hopefully those two can push me on and hopefully there will be a lot to follow,” Vardy told British media.Leicester have been in a turmoil after media reports suggested a players’ revolt led to Claudio Ranieri’s sacking on Thursday, nine months after the manager led the club to the league title.Vardy, goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel and winger Marc Albrighton have since denied the allegations.”We’ve come under a lot of unfair stick with the stuff that’s been in the press,” Vardy said.”What you’ve seen out there is a reaction from the lads, the performance showed exactly that. Now it’s down to us to do that consistently moving forward.”Leicester, who are 15th in the table and two points above the bottom three with 12 games remaining, host relegation rivals Hull City on Saturday.last_img read more

Another wide receiver, Sean Savoy, is heading to Maryland, where he’ll team up with Va. Tech quarterback Josh Jackson, who is also transferring to play for the Terps. In 2018, Kumah snared 42 passes for 559 yards and seven touchdowns. He caught 28 balls for 324 yards and two touchdowns in 2017.In 2016, Kumah saw action in all 13 games, but did not record a catch. He will be eligible immediately at his new destination.Notre Dame is losing top wide receiver Miles Boykin, and while the Fighting Irish have a number of pass catchers returning, led by Chase Claypool and Chris Finke, the team could use a veteran like Kumah to fill a key role.last_img read more
